UNTOLD has learnt that the real reason men of the Department of State Security Services, SSS, invaded the Akwa Ibom State Government House, on Thursday, September 3, was because they had received security reports that the Hilltop mansion was harbouring a stockpile of arms and ammunition.
Security sources privy to the details of the operation however said that rather than find the weapons it went after, men of the SSS found a large stockpile of U.S dollars in one of the rooms in the expansive complex.
The security agents were said to have found the U.S dollars in one of the rooms in one of the guest houses within the expansive complex which also houses the Presidential lodge said to be currently occupied by Godswill Akpabio, former governor of the state who is now a serving Senator.
The agents were said to have searched the guest houses and Presidential lodge after searching the portion of the complex which is supposed to be the residence of the governor but yet to be occupied by Udom Emmanuel, the current Governor.
Security sources say SSS officials on the operation, made up of officers from the headquarters, Abuja and another detachment from the Uyo office of the agency, however did not touch the money as they were not under any instructions to move it.
Expectedly, the SSS raid has drawn strong condemnations from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which even went as far as accusing the security agency of wanting to kidnap the Akwa Ibom State governor.
Prince Uche Secondus, acting National Chairman of the PDP, disclosed this on Friday, when he hosted Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa State governor, who visited the party’s national secretariat to submit his governorship nomination form.
Elsewhere in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, a similar view was expressed on Friday by Ayodele Fayose, Ekiti State governor.
Fayose condemned Thursday’s invasion of the Akwa Ibom State Government House by armed men of the SSS, calling for the immediate sack of Lawal Daura, the Director General of the agency.
Curiously, both the Akwa Ibom State government and the SSS are yet to officially comment on the Thursday raid as at the time of filling this report.1 comment
